Description

SUMMARY: The accountant is primarily responsible for applying principles of accounting to analyze financial information, maintain general ledger, and prepare financial reports by performing the assigned duties from the list below. The accountant should be a self-starter with strong attention to detail and above-average Excel skills. They should be customer service oriented, enjoy working with people, and be able to maintain discretion with personnel information.

This is a on-campus position.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reconcile accounts, research discrepancies, and maintain schedules for items including, but not limited to, student financial aid receivables, contributions, grants, prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, and health care.

  • Record journal entries for month-end reconciliations.

  • Responsible for accounting for fixed assets, including:

  • Working with facilities and other departments to review transactions, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures and general accounting standards.

  • Posting of transactions to fixed asset sub-ledger.

  • Generated and processed monthly depreciation journal entries and rollforward schedules.

  • Prepare capital acquisition reports for financial reporting, as needed.

  • Participate in inventory and tagging projects on an ad-hoc basis.

  • Work collaboratively with health clinic billing personnel to resolve issues related to clinic finances and ensure all transactions are reported accurately and by required deadlines.

  • Assist with the Finance/Accounting department's tax and compliance issues, such as the University Form 990, preparation of Form 1099 and 1098-T, and sales tax.

  • Research GL detail and transactions to assist other departments on an ad-hoc basis.

  • Be a resource and backup for key functions in the accounting department, such as reconciliation between systems, required daily processes like deposits or journal entries, and assisting students.

  • Assist with deposits and ACH/wire transfer origin to ensure proper separation of duties, as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

COMPETENCIES: To perform the job successfully, the accountant must:

  • Have strong attention to detail, able to pick out small discrepancies and understand the need for accuracy and nuance.

  • Be knowledgeable of GAAP, particularly in a non-profit environment, and have experience with reconciling balance sheet accounts and month end close procedures.

  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Possess a strong ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Be able to interact with people at several different levels in the university, both with and without any experience with financial reporting, in a professional manner.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, and variances.

QUALIFICATIONS: The Accountant must communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree,with a focus on accounting, finance, or general business.

  • Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week on occasion.
