Accountant II position works within the NC Department of Adult Correction Controller's office. This position will work in the Annual Comprehensive Financial Reporting (ACFR) and Fiscal Policy sections. This position is responsible for preparation of the NC Department of Adult Correction Annual Financial reports and standalone agency financial statements to ensure they are complete, accurate and prepared in accordance with General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and timely submission to the Office of the State Controller and Office of the State Auditor.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Position will review accounts payable job order reports.

  • Reconciling Accounts Payables data.

  • Update fiscal policies as needed.

  • Identify coding errors and communicate findings to managers or budget staff for review and correction.

  • Responsible for reconciling capital asset activity monthly.

  • Coordinate structure and/or buildings transfers with State Property Division, Department of Administration and NC Department of Insurance.

  • Monthly bank reconciling for disbursements and verification with State Treasurer,  and identifying errors.

  • Month end closings and journal entries.

This position is eligible for a flexible/hybrid telework schedule under the State of NC Telework Program. 

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Experience with general accounting principles, practices and financial management systems

  • Thorough knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) practices

  • Experience preparing worksheets for Annual Financial Reports (ACFR) and analyzing data to prepare Journal entries

  • Proficient in excel skills including conditional formatting, pivot tables, v-lookup and formulas

Management Preferences:  

  • NCFS or Oracle based accounting experience

  • Demonstrated ability performing bank reconciliations and using accounting judgment and theory to resolve fiscal issues

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate both orally and in writing effectively

Bachelor's degree in accounting, or a degree in business administration, finance, public administration, or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution with 18 semester hours of accounting coursework; and two years of professional accounting/auditing experience in the preparation of interpretive or analytical accounting. financial statements and reports (OR) equivalent combination of education and experience.
