The City of Chesapeake seeks a collaborative and proactive Accountant II to join our central finance team.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal departments to ensure accurate and timely recording of long-term debt, investment, lease and subscription-based information technology agreement (SBITA) transactions. The ability to problem-solve independently is essential for this role. The Accountant II will be key in resolving discrepancies, reconciling accounts, and ensuring outstanding items are addressed by month-end.
Responsibilities will include:
Collaborate with team members to record investment transactions in general ledger and SymPro investment management software.
Request payment and record activity in GL for Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) Trust Fund.
Work with departments to identify and accurately record leases and SBITAs in DebtBook software.
Perform monthly reconciliations of OPEB, long-term debt, investment, lease and SBITA accounts.
Support year-end long-term debt, investment, lease and SBITA reconciliations, analysis, and preparation of workpapers.
Assist with annual financial audit and preparation of ACFR.
Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or closely related field. Master's degree in accounting, business, public administration or a related field desired.
Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses: Certified Public Accountant certification desired
Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience with long-term debt, leases and/or investments.
