The City of Chesapeake seeks a collaborative and proactive Accountant II to join our central finance team.

The successful candidate will work closely with internal departments to ensure accurate and timely processing of banking transactions. Advanced Excel skills and the ability to problem-solve independently are essential for this role. The Accountant II will be key in resolving discrepancies, reconciling accounts, and ensuring outstanding items are addressed by month-end.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborate with team members to upload Bank of America Prior Day Reports to the Excel-based PDR Tool, facilitating accurate posting of receipts to PeopleSoft ERP software.

  • Research and identify payments received from the Commonwealth of Virginia, collaborating with departments to determine appropriate account coding.

  • Work closely with the Treasurer's Office to match daily bank deposits to Prior Day Reports, ensuring completeness of records.

  • Record daily transfers between General bank accounts and various departments, including Payroll, Accounts Payable, Mosquito Control, returned checks, and Schools food accounts.

  • Accurately record credit card and bank fees for the City and toll road facility.

  • Collaborate with team members to gather necessary information for weekly wire transfers of toll revenue to the Trustee.

  • Work with departments to identify and accurately record any remaining receipts in clearing accounts at month-end.

  • Assist in performing monthly reconciliations of the general City bank account and 13 other City bank accounts.

  • Support year-end cash reconciliations, analysis, and preparation of workpapers.

Required Qualifications

Vocational/Educational Requirement:

Requires a bachelor's degree in accounting or closely related field. Master's degree in accounting, business, public administration or a related field desired.

Experience:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Certified Public Accountant certification desired

Special Requirements:

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel.

  • Three to five years of experience in a high-volume treasury office with multiple revenue streams.

  • CPA or CPFO certification.
