Job Description
Job Title: Accountant
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Chief Business Official, performs accounting activities related to the preparation, maintenance and review of financial records, accounts and reports for the District. This job requires a high level of organizational skills and the ability to work independently with little direction. This job requires specified knowledge of all areas of bookkeeping, general ledger maintenance, school accounting process, and computer operation skills. This job is responsible for accurate and timely work production.
Examples of Duties:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Perform a variety of professional accounting duties involved in reviewing, analyzing, auditing, reconciling, maintaining and adjusting various district accounts, funds and budgets.
Participate in the preparation of budget development.
Monitor and track district and program budgets.
Prepare and input accounting/budget information to computerized system.
Assist in preparation of monthly payroll.
Track employee absence records.
Assist in working with brokers on district insurance matters; calculate district liability of health and welfare costs; prepare claims report of student and other accidents for the board.
Review and audit financial statements and other fiscal records for accuracy.
Perform year-end closing procedures for all funds, complete SACS report.
Prepare required financial reports for local, state, federal agencies.
Assist in preparation of various analyses of/for collective bargaining proposals.
Understand payroll and accounts payable functions for cross-training purposes.
Assist with maintaining position control as assigned.
Maintain inventory and fixed asset records.
Coordinate accounting activities with other district offices and the county of education office.
Provide guidance and act as a resource for the interpretation of SACS codes; maintain chart of accounts.
Perform all duties as assigned including administrative support to the CBO
Knowledge of
Generally accepted accounting principles, generally accepted auditing standards, and other advanced techniques and methods of governmental accounting, auditing and budgeting
State School Accounting law, practices and procedures
Computer information system operations and applications related to accounting, budgeting and financial management
Financial analysis and projection techniques
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
Standardized Account Code Structure (SACS)
Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB)
Ability to
Apply accounting and budgeting principles and procedures.
Interpret and apply laws and regulations affecting school districts.
Maintain current knowledge of laws, codes, rules and regulations.
Reconcile, balance and audit accounts.
Design and prepare spreadsheets to analyze data.
Analyze and resolve problems and draw accurate conclusions.
Prepare clear and accurate financial statements.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Schedule and coordinate work flow to meet timelines and deadlines.
Use interpersonal skills, patience and courtesy.
Establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.
Education and Experience
AA Degree in accounting; BA with major in accounting or business administration preferred
Minimum two years professional accounting experience performing varied financial analysis, auditing, budget development, record-keeping and report preparation duties
License
A valid California Driver's license
