This position performs tasks in the Access Services department, and at the Front Desk, to provide library users with access to library materials and service.
Provides exemplary customer service to library patrons and models a positive and helpful attitude for student employees.
Instructs and supervises student employees in the use of library systems and equipment (i.e. library catalog, ILS, print system, POS) as well as library policies and procedures (i.e. consortial borrowing, course reserves, shelving, customer service).
Uses specialized knowledge of ILS to manage and maintain services in area of individual responsibility (i.e. Course Reserves, Stacks Management, Fines & Billing, Technology).
Provides assistance to library users in the operation of various pieces of library technology and equipment. Coordinates the proper functioning of library collection of technology tools.
Assists at library service points such as the Research, Reading, and Writing Studio to aid patrons with technology or writing questions.
Performs all circulation services, from routine to complex, as well as makes decisions concerning exceptional circumstances, e.g., waive and/or explain fines and library policies, extend loan periods, and authorize lending privileges in special circumstances.
Uses problem solving skills to analyze, negotiate and resolve, or report, library user complaints concerning building, equipment, or service.
Substitutes and performs the duties of absent staff and student employees as needed.
Assumes responsibility, with other staff members, for the safety and security of staff, students, equipment, and materials in the building as well as during any emergency. Serves as a Building Emergency Coordinator.
Responsible for opening and closing (securing), and maintaining the operations of the library building and Access Services as assigned. The person in this position will typically work an evening/closing shift Sunday through Thursday, but scheduling needs may change.
Proficient with Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word and Excel.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree, some coursework in library science a plus.
One year of public service experience required, two years preferred. At least one year of library experience, preferred.
Supervisory experience a plus.
Excellent verbal and written communication qualifications and excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work in a team.
Able to effectively use SPU supplied office equipment and software applications, as well as other software necessary to fulfill duties of this position.
Experience with a Library resource management system, preferably Ex Libris Alma; HTML, XML, a plus.
