TITLE:

Academic Tutor

POSITION SUMMARY:

Help students develop good study and learning habits while monitoring progress and maintaining written records of students' progress. To communicate regularly with students, staff, and administration on academic progress and concerns.To assist students with academic support, while affirming their abilities and striving to promote dignity in all relationships in order to deliver Framingham Public Schools' high expectations for achievement, equal access to high levels of instruction, the achievement of academic proficiency for all students, and the closing of the opportunity gap among subgroups within the schools.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Bachelor's degree and teacher certification or equivalent combination of education and experience

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

College-level course work in the high school academic subject(s) to be tutored

SKILLS AND ABILITY:

Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all programs in a school; excellent skill in oral and written communications;ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, teachers, support staff and associates. Flexibility will be essential. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Help student interpret teachers' directions on assignments

  • Review course material with the student

  • Help student organize his/her school work in the subject(s) being tutored

  • Help student with homework

  • Help student study for tests and other assessments

  • Communicate with FPS department heads and/or teachers regarding assignments, due dates, course content, etc.

  • Communicate with parents/guardians to arrange tutoring times and locations

  • Meet with student in the home if parent/guardian present and/or at the Framingham Public Library

  • Meet with the student for two hours per week per subject: The two hours per subject can occur in one session or it can be divided over more sessions during the course of the week, according to the tutor's and the student's availability.

  • Submit a weekly log of work accomplished and/or topics/material covered in each tutoring session

  • Pick up and drop off work at the student's school as necessary

  • Travel within Framingham required: To/from the student's home, the Framingham Public Library, and the student's school

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about and may be required to traverse occasionally throughout the school building. The employee must also often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is expected to lift at least 20 lbs (i.e. books, school supplies, etc.). The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and use hand strength to grasp tools. Occasionally s/he operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). The employee must be able to input information into a computer and as well as read material from a computer monitor as well as handwritten or printed matter with or without visual aids.

The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members in person and on the telephone. In the classroom, the employee must be able to see and hear on a continuous basis in order to ensure the safety of students as well as speak frequently to provide instruction. On rare occasions, it may be necessary to move quickly across even or uneven surfaces.

The employee will be working in a normal school environment with an acceptable level of noise. The employee interacts with students, parents, and other staff members. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.

This position is classified as non-exempt.
