Job Summary

The Academic Support Coordinator, FGCU R.I.S.E. supports the academic success of FGCU R.I.S.E. (Real Independence, Successful Employment) program students. This role works closely with students in the program to schedule and register for RISE courses, teaches R.I.S.E. core courses, and supervises all students enrolled in electives. Additionally, this position collaborates and consults with FGCU faculty who teach students from RISE in elective courses, monitors student progress, collects data on attendance and course performance, provides guidance and tutoring as needed for students, and facilitates semesterly parent training/information sessions.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Teaches FGCU R.I.S.E. program courses. In Fall semester, teaches SLS 1101 University Transition (3 credits), SLS 1251 Social Skills (2 credits), SLS 1570 Learning with Tech 1 (2 credits), and in Spring semester teaches SLS 1571 Learning with Tech II (2 credits), REA 1105 Reading for Life (2 credits).

  • Collaborates and consults with FGCU faculty who teach students from RISE in elective courses. Facilitates semesterly faculty education. Supports faculty teaching elective courses through training and informative sessions.

  • Provides support for students during elective courses by monitoring student academic progress and provides guidance and tutoring as needed for students.

  • Collects and compiles data, including student attendance and course performance. Conducts bi-weekly check ins with both professors and students and maintains all documentation for grant purposes

  • Collaborates with advising services to oversee the scheduling and registration of R.I.S.E. program courses. Works closely with students to create course schedules according to goals and assists with the registration process.

  • Collaborates with Adaptive Services to assist students in registering and understanding available support services.

  • Participates in team-based activities such as Person-Centered Planning meetings, open house, Weekly Sidelines, graduation celebration, graduation, annual grant funder conferences, admissions committee, and recruitment.

Other Duties:

  • Serves on committees as assigned.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Special Education or closely related field.

  • Two years of professional full-time experience teaching individuals with disabilities.

  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).

  • Valid Teaching Certification in ESE K-12

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four years of professional full-time experience working with individuals with disabilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, statues, regulations, codes, and standards related to the employment of individuals with disabilities.

  • Knowledge of how to plan and assess effective instruction.

  • Knowledge of and experience with best practices in post-secondary transition for individuals with disabilities.

  • Knowledge of characteristics and support needs of individuals with intellectual disabilities.

  • Ability to take initiative to plan, organize, coordinate and perform work in various situations when numerous and diverse demands are involved.

  • Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment.

  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.

  • Ability to understand, interpret, apply, and explain personnel policies and procedures.

  • Ability to effectively manage the work of others by providing information, guidance and motivation.

  • Ability to compile, organize, interpret, and communicate data and results in a concise format.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion at all times.

  • Ability to work independently to complete assignments.

  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
