The University of Maryland School of Medicine is looking for a junior-level academic development/success professional to undertake a variety of tasks aimed at enhancing the academic performance and experience of medical students. This role requires an individual with intermediate expertise who can make significant decisions within guidelines. Responsibilities include contributing with the development of instructional activities, curricula, and study skill sessions; assessing students' needs for accommodations; and providing personalized support and counseling. The professional will help monitor student progress, collaborate with deans on educational methods, and contribute to the program's success, especially in preparing students for the USMLE Steps 1 and 2. They will also be involved in program reviews for quality improvement, assist with coordination of pre-matriculation summer programs, student teacher selection, and help organize tutorials and study workshops. Administrative tasks such as report preparation, record-keeping, and data analysis are also key components of the role. The goal is to identify students facing academic challenges, provide intervention plans, and assist in building effective study strategies to maximize student success.

Essential Functions:

  • Academic Program Coordination:

  • Assist with coordination to ensure compliance with academic standards and institutional policies.

  • Help advise on the planning, design, and implementation of courses and programs.

  • Assist with coordination of pre-matriculation summer program and student teacher selection.

Student Support:

  • Review student data to identify those needing additional support.

  • Meet with students to craft solutions for their challenges.

  • Provide counseling and academic support for at-risk students.

  • Identify students' potential need for accommodations and possible learning deficiencies.

  • Assist with study plans for exam and assignment preparation.

  • Help create and deliver presentations on learning strategies and study techniques.

Tutor Program Administration:

  • Coordinate tutor program activities, including training and events.

  • Assist with timecard approval process and plan periodic meetings for updates.

  • Help select and interview tutors.

Academic Enrichment Program (AEP) Administration:

  • Assist with coordination of AEP course enrollment and track tutor sessions.

  • Help facilitate student meetings to review assignment completion.

Curriculum Development:

  • Identify and implement innovative techniques for course development.

  • Prepare students for high pass rates in USMLE Steps 1 and 2.

Reporting and Data Analysis:

  • Prepare periodic reports on academic program activities and progress.

  • Compile and analyze academic data to support instructional strategies.

  • Monitor student performance and compile an annual report on academic progress.

Collaboration and Decision-Making:

  • Work with the Assistant Dean of Assessment and Educational Methods.

  • Participate in assessment and teaching methodology decision-making.

Administrative Support:

  • Provide administrative support, including report preparation and record maintenance.

Performs other duties as assigned

Education: Master's degree in education, counseling, or related field

Experience: Three (3) years of related experience providing educational skills counseling, training, instructional design, or other related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Possess knowledge of educational counseling including curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and measurement of training effects. Effective presentation skills. Ability to plan, organize, and create work to meet or exceed goals. Able to perform position in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws.

  • Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness of trends and influences.

  • Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement a mission and strategic vision. Possess strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems, make decisions, and prioritize.

  • Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and ability to effectively use technology, including excel, databases, and electronic scheduling. Maintains productivity and uses knowledge strategies to increase personal counseling skills and abilities.

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Interprets and understands written information and can listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding. Ability to network and interact, as well as support effective partnerships with key groups and individuals.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of students and information obtained.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with others to meet customer expectations and provide follow up with students.

Hiring Range: $72,000 - $80,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
