Title: Academic Resource Center Graduate Assistant (non-teaching)

Part-Time (Academic Year Appointment - August 1-May 31). This position is located in Seward, NE.

Position Purpose:

This position will assist with providing academic support to students, especially those who are on academic probation or identified as academically at-risk, assist with academic outreach to the general student population, and occasionally assist with test coordination and proctoring. The Graduate Assistant will work under the Director of the Academic Resource Center (ARC) and Disability Support Services (DSS) and alongside other ARC/DSS staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct weekly individual meetings with students who are on academic probation. Topics may include academic intervention, study skills, goal-setting, organization, test preparation, time management, referrals to other campus resources as needed.

  • Work one-on-one with other students who need help with academic skills, including those students who are identified as academically at-risk. These may include drop-in students, referrals from faculty and coaches, and/or referrals from SOAP.

  • Work to promote the services of the Academic Resource Center and the tutoring supports available to students.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Must be admitted into a degree program.

  • Must be registered for at least 3 credit hours per fall/spring semester, summer is optional.

Experience:

  • Prior related experience working with students on strategies for critical thinking, writing, time management, academic goal setting, study skills, and test taking is preferred.

Proficiencies:

  • Ability to work with and learn computer software applications, including Microsoft applications, databases, spreadsheets and word processing.

Special Position Requirements:

  • Available to meet with students during typical work hours/week.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively connect with and counsel students.

  • Ability to establish a rapport and interact with faculty members, coaches, and academic administration.

  • Must be proactive, creative, responsible, and able to learn rapidly.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • This position will frequently come into contact with situations or information that is sensitive in nature, and therefore requires a signed "confidentiality statement" upon beginning employment. It is an expectation that any information regarding a student, staff member, or organization is held in confidence and should not be shared with others unless it is with the appropriate persons, or your supervisor. This includes (but is not limited to) information found in student information files, medical excuses, documentation, and office and phone conversations. Violations of confidentiality can result in immediate termination as well as other actions deemed necessary by the Director of the ARC/DSS.
