POSITION DETAILS

  • Hunter College seeks an innovative leader to reimagine and reinvigorate our Writing Learning Center. The Hunter College Dr. Murray and Anne C.Rockowitz Writing Center currently provides services to improve our students' writing processes, by helping them to considerhow they engage with texts and write papers. The Writing Centerprovides tutorial assistance and academic advisement to all registered students (graduate and undergraduate) as well as technical support and development to faculty, staff, and alumni. The Writing Center Directorreports to the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and oversees the daily operations of the center.

In additional to CUNY overview, the Writing Center Director's responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Expand Writing Center services to match the need of our students and the communication demands of the 21 st Century.This may include working with students on multimodal writing and writing for presentations.+ Developmeasurable Writing Center learning goals and lead the assessment of Writing Center staff, tutors, and programs while also evaluating the writing needs of Hunter College students.+ Contribute to and implement strategic college-wide program planning, in collaboration with other Learning Center directors.+ Interview, hire, on-board and develop part-time employees in close collaboration with other members of administrative staff; andmentor student tutors.+ Develop a robust program ofWriting Center outreach and marketing to students at Hunter's main campus and satellite facilities.+ Manage the Writing Center website resources and the online tutoring program.+ Serve as a consultant to faculty and staff on the instruction or pedagogy of writing.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.

  • Experience with innovative, accessible, and flexible strategies for expanding the culture of writing at Hunter College including:

  • Best practices for training, recruiting, and assessment of undergraduate and graduate student tutors with a diversity of backgrounds and from a variety of majors.

  • National standards (College Reading and Learning Association, Council on Advancement of Standards in Higher Education etc.), or other criteria for assessment of Writing Center programs.

  • Marketing and outreach to students identified using EAB Navigate or a similar online tool for connecting students to skill-building resources.

  • Developing initiatives ancillary to tutoring that will inculcate the practice of recursive writing among Hunter College students (academic coaching, skill-specific workshops, writing labs, writing clubs etc.).

  • Ph.D. in English, English Education, Writing, Rhetoric, or Composition and Master's degreein English, English Education, Writing, Rhetoric, or Composition.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines and manage multiple demands and/or projects.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, a strong customer service orientation and attention to details are essential.

  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of faculty, staff, and students.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

Directs curriculum development and operations of a learning resource center.

  • Designs, implements and monitors a comprehensive student support program based on targeted academic resources such as tutoring, remedial and/or other related support services

  • Administers all curricular, administrative, and financial aspects of the center; oversees design and delivery of various programs sponsored by the center

  • Performs outcomes assessment and creates strategic plan to further develop center offerings

  • Ensures ongoing faculty and staff development to support high quality student services delivery; promotes best practices in field

  • Manages annual budget; develops proposals and other initiatives for expanded center funding

  • Cultivates and maintains strategic partnerships; serves as primary liaison to faculty and administrators to plan and execute center activities

  • Manages professional, instructional and clerical staff

  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Salary commensurate with education and experience ($111,560 - $119,995).
