Department/Division Purpose:

The Pueblo Community College Library empowers students to be informed participants in careers and society by providing equal access to information, teaching information literacy and critical thinking skills, and creating opportunity for community engagement.

Job Summary Statement:

The Academic Librarian serves as academic support and empowers users with information literacy skills through classroom instruction, research appointments, workshops, relevant programming, digital library support, outreach and collaboration, and service desk assistance. The Academic Librarian also serves as full-level Technical Services and ensures findability and access of all materials through cataloging and collection development assistance.

This position has been identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) in accordance with Department of Education guidelines. As a CSA, the incumbent is required to report crimes that they become aware of to the Department of Public Safety and must attend related annual training.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statutes 24-50-135, this position has been exempted from the State Personnel System.

Job Duties

Essential Functions

  • Information Literacy Instruction: Plans and provides individual and group instruction in information literacy to students, faculty, and staff across all disciplines and all campuses. Aligns library instruction with ACRL's Framework standards, curriculum, and emerging pedagogical technologies. Meets the needs of a wide range of classes and diverse patron abilities. Understands best practices of and collaborates with assessment to continually improve and develop instructional outcomes. Flexibility, adaptability, and strong public speaking skills across modalities are necessary attributes.

  • Reference Services: Provides excellent library reference services, which requires advanced skills in research, oral and written communication, technology, and professional interactions with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse college community. Provides reference services in various modalities including email, in person, chat, and telephone to Pueblo Community College students and the Colorado Community College System's consortial chat.

  • Digital Library Support: Creates, maintains, delivers, and promotes information literacy materials on the Library's webpage and in D2L via research guides, video tutorials, and other emerging technology tools. Ensures all material in the digital library is compliant with accessibility standards. Requires a high level of proficiency with all online library resources and current technologies, as well as the ability to directly support academic program specific information.

  • Cataloging: Manages all full-level Technical Services in the preparation, classification, cataloging, and promotion of newly acquired materials in multiple formats. Manages de-accessioning processes and coordinates with Director of Library Services with donations. Possesses knowledge of copy and original cataloging standards and processes for circulation, course reserves, and archival materials.

  • Outreach and Collaboration: Provides library services to all patrons through continual outreach and collaboration. Promotes library instruction services at part-time instructor orientations, departmental and campus meetings, marketing, and through individualized communication. Collaborates frequently with all Colorado Community College libraries. Serves as point of contact for faculty recommendations on workshops, instruction, and collection development materials. Attends campus and community events to provide services, programs, and promotional material to increase awareness of library services.

  • Programming: Collaborate with library staff, campus, and community partners to provide dynamic, unique, and engaging programming for all populations with a focus on currently enrolled students. Align programming with information literacy, digital literacy, DEI, local authors, and other relevant academic topics.

  • Collection Development: Provides ongoing evaluation of existing materials to ensure they are current and relevant for degree programs and course offerings, and adjust to the Library's ever-changing needs. Make recommendations to Director of Library Services, or act on their behalf, to acquire needed materials. Collaborate with faculty and staff to create and manage specialized collections including Welding, Course Reserves, and archival materials.

  • Service Desk Responsibilities: Assist patrons with material and equipment checkout, technology assistance, informational questions, and other assistance. Supervises work study and other student employees when needed. Oversees opening and closing procedures with student employees. Requires the ability to supervise, make decisions, follow procedures, and diffuse situations with tact and diplomacy when necessary. Serves as person in charge when Library Director is unavailable.

  • Assesses individual and department work processes and recommends improvements.

  • Complies with State Fiscal Rules, State Board policies, System and College protocols, and departmental procedures.

  • Obtains and maintains proficiency with required systems and equipment.

  • Maintains confidentiality of student and employee information as required.

  • Completes all required compliance training within the established timeline.

  • Serves on committees and other groups as assigned.

  • Other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Master's Degree in Library Science from a regionally accredited institution.

Experience:

  • One year of experience or educational understanding of cataloging library materials into an integrated library system.

  • One year of experience providing library reference/research services.

  • One year of experience teaching and assessing information literacy skills.

  • Two years of experience in providing assistance on a service desk or library floor.

  • Experience uploading and maintaining information on a website.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Demonstrated skill working with a diverse population.

  • Ability to communicate clearly to multiple diverse groups to include administration, stakeholders, employees and students.

  • Knowledge and understanding of DEI in programming and collection development.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and continued learning in the use of technology including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Applications, Google Suite, ILS programs, printers, video conferencing software, and instructional tools including screen sharing.

  • Verifiable experience in a position that required effective communication verbally, in writing, and through video conferencing.

  • Verifiable experience in a position that required time management and organizational skills with the ability to self-direct, manage multiple projects, and adjust priorities in a changing environment.
