The Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), a collaborative entity of the Heersink School of Medicine and the School of Engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), is actively seeking applications from exceptionally qualified individuals for open rank/open tenure faculty positions. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a distinguished track record of research and scholarship in neuroengineering or neural engineering. Areas of research interest include but are not limited to:

  • NP engineering, NP imaging, and NP immune modulation

  • Neural signal and image analysis employing cutting-edge methodologies such as machine learning and deep learning.

  • Invasive and noninvasive neuromodulation techniques such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), focused ultrasound (FUS), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).

  • Development of brain-computer interfaces for seamless integration of devices with the human nervous system.

  • Computational modeling of receptor-ligand interactions within the brain.

  • Anatomical and functional mapping utilizing electrode arrays, EEG, ECoG, iEEG, MEG, and MRI.

The Schools of Engineering and Medicine are strategically positioned on the same campus in Birmingham, facilitating seamless collaboration. Our neuroengineering research thrives on extensive partnerships with the Departments of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Neurosurgery, alongside the Comprehensive Neuroscience Center. UAB has recently inaugurated a University-wide Consortium for Neuroengineering and Brain-Computer Interfaces, along with a cross-school Ph.D. program in Neuroengineering, underlining our commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration.

Clinical Strengths: Our clinical expertise spans various neurological domains, including stroke and vascular disease, movement disorders, memory disorders, epilepsy, neuroimmunology, neuroimaging, neuromuscular disease, and neuro-oncology.

Noteworthy programs encompass deep brain stimulation, epilepsy surgery, and functional and molecular neuroimaging. UAB boasts significant NIH Center and infrastructure awards, further solidifying our standing as a leading research institution in neurological sciences.

The School has approximately 50 full-time faculty members and enrolls nearly 900 undergraduates across 6 undergraduate majors in four departments:

Biomedical Engineering; Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering; Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Materials Engineering. Our undergraduate programs emphasize practical, hands-on learning complemented by a guaranteed internship. Over 500 graduate students pursue a range of programs including traditional on-campus M.S./Ph.D. pathways as well as online M.Eng. degrees for working professionals. Biomedical Engineering at UAB is a joint department, with some faculty holding primary appointments in the School of Engineering and some appointed in the School of Medicine. This arrangement provides career paths ranging from a research-focused path typical of a medical school basic science department to a balanced teaching and research path typical of a school of Engineering.

The Department is nationally recognized in the areas of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and houses both an $11M PPG and a T32 training grant from the National Institutes of Health. UAB's Biomedical Engineering graduate program is among the top-3 public BME programs in the South according to US News and World Report.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Engineering or related fields (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or Biology) and have previous research experience in neuroengineering / neural engineering .

Preferred Qualifications

Ideal candidates will have a strong record of research and scholarship in neuroengineering / neural engineering. A proven track record of competitive funding as PI is preferred.

We particularly encourage applicants with expertise in NanoPatical (NP)/nanoscale engineering, NP/nanoscale imaging, and NP/nanoscale immune modulation to apply. To be competitive for a tenured position, candidates must have an outstanding vision for independent research and be nationally recognized for their scholarship.
