The School of Occupational Therapy Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC) is a core faculty member, with administrative duties, who reports to the chair, and is responsible for the coordination, oversight, and management of level 1 and level 2 fieldwork. This position will be a .75 FTE 12-month position and is eligible to be a hybrid position, with designated time weekly on campus in Bangor, ME. Faculty rank will be assigned based on the individual's academic experience. The AFWC will ensure that the fieldwork design reflects the curricular design and that the fieldwork experiences meet all accreditation requirements. The AFWC plans, coordinates, facilitates, administers, and monitors fieldwork placements on behalf of the school of occupational therapy, and in coordination with academic and fieldwork faculty. The AFWC serves as a liaison between the occupational therapy program and the fieldwork education site as part of his/her responsibilities. In addition to these administrative responsibilities, as a faculty member the AFWC will teach, engage in service, scholarship, and advising as assigned by the chair and Dean of the College of Health and Pharmacy and is eligible for multi-year contract per Faculty Handbook.

Examples of Duties

The AFWC will work collaboratively with the other College of Health and Pharmacy (COHP) clinical/experiential leads to drive efficiencies and effectiveness for clinical/experiential education across the college. The following are key responsibilities:

1.Develop, monitor, and refine the fieldwork education component of the curriculum as outlined in accreditation standards.

2.Facilitate quality learning experiences for students during fieldwork education.

3.Evaluate students' performance, in cooperation with other faculty, to determine their ability to integrate didactic and fieldwork learning experiences and to progress within the curriculum.

4.Provide and/or coordinate clinical instructor (CI) education and assist in the orientation, training, and evaluation of CIs.

5.Monitor and collect data to inform the OT program chair and faculty about the quality of field work experiences, decisions for site selection, and to meet course learning outcomes.

6.Foster positive relationships with each site and share feedback received from the sites with chair and other faculty members.

7.Perform site visits and/or regular meetings with CIs to give feedback and perform evaluation processes to enhance student experiences and build community connections.

8.Attend training sessions and meetings and collaborate with the administrative assistant/Chair and other COHP clinical/experiential coordinators/directors in maintenance of the Fieldwork/Experiential/Clinical Learning Management Systems (i.e., Exxat, etc.).

9.Teach courses, at appropriate load, as assigned by the program chair/dean.



  1. Advise students in the occupational therapy program.

  2. Participate in required meetings and committees of the SON and College of Health and Pharmacy as determined by the Dean of COHP and Chair.

  3. Maintain currency and contribution to the OT profession through service and scholarship.

  4. Handle budget-related tasks as directed by the Dean of COHP and Chair.

  5. Other duties may be assigned.


Typical Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (professional entry level or post professional) required. A candidate who is in the process of completing a doctoral degree may be considered.

  • Active unencumbered, unrestricted Occupational Therapist license in the State of Maine required or eligible for licensure and will obtain within six months of hire.

  • Minimum of Two years (5 preferred) of occupational therapy experience including:

  • Clinical practice as an occupational therapist

  • Professional experience as a fieldwork educator or plan for completion of fieldwork educator training (AOTA)

Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities-The individual must have the following abilities:

  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to foster collaboration and problem solving

  • Ability to work well with others

  • Comfort with health care technology

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time

  • Organizational and networking skills

  • Proven administrative and strategic thinking skills

  • Familiarity with health care organizations throughout the State

  • Flexibility and adaptability to meet the clinical needs of faculty and students

  • Understanding of educational processes and measurement of educational outcomes

  • Innovative skills and a positive and enthusiastic attitude
