ACADEMIC COUNSELOR 2

Job Summary

Provides academic guidance to both current and prospective students as a means to ensure their success at LSU and to help define their academic goals.

Job Responsibilities

80% Provides educational guidance and assistance for students by planning schedules, recommending courses and determining appropriate education solutions for a diverse population of students. Follows through and tracks the advancement of students as they strive to accomplish their academic goals. Additionally, provides case management to students who do not meet their educational requirements and offers guidance toward other academic programs.

Utilizes the various electronic and print-based materials, as well as the multiple university databases to interpret LSU degree programs. Serves as the conduit for students in interpreting and enforcing university policies and procedures that students encounter in University College and other LSU entities. Manages a counselor: student ratio of approximately 1:500 serving prospective students, new students, re-entry students and transfer students who are enrolled in University College.

15% Assists Director/UCFY in training new staff. Acts as a mentor to a defined group of Academic Counselor 1 staff, to assist new staff in professional success within the unit and provide guidance in the areas of professional standards, University policy and procedures, and available resources.

5% Conducts a variety of academic workshops and public presentations for current and prospective students and parents. May include occasional nights and weekends.

Records counseling notes in a variety of formats for reference and for referrals to appropriate campus departments and agencies.

Guides students through a variety of academic appeals processes and presents these appeals to the administration on behalf of the students. Serves as a liaison with at least one of the academic senior colleges at LSU. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level: Bachelor's Degree and one year of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education Level: Master's Degree

Specific Degree: Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or related human relations field

Years of Experience: 3 years

Specific Experience: Demonstrated ability to coordinate and direct academic programs; demonstrated human relations and communications skills; ability to work with a diverse student population.

Preferred Certifications/Licenses:

Eligibility for professional licensure by the accrediting body for the discipline.

Special of Physical Qualifications:

As with all LSU employees, academic counselors have an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center.

In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the Counselor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.

20% Coordinates and executes UCFY programs, including but not limited to, Online, 25+, Transfer/Re-entry Students, Summer Scholars, Allied Health, Pre-Nursing, recruiting efforts, and any future established programs. Coordinates, develops, and manages academic counseling to prospective and current students in a designated sub-population, including but not limited to, LSU Global, LSU Online, Pre-Scholars Academy students, warning/probation, high priority, newly admitted transfer/re-entry students, Allied Health students, Pre-Nursing students, and any future established advising sub-populations. Assesses program, maintains statistics, collaborates with campus partners, and provides semester, annual, and ad hoc reports as needed.
