At the Student Achievement and Resources Center (SARC), the Academic Coach - English/Speech professional tutor will conduct tutoring sessions one-on-one as well as in group sessions with students taking English/Speech classes through traditional face-to-face courses on campus, and on-line classes. Professional tutors will have the ability to work with a wide range of student learning styles, needs and skill levels, as well as diverse backgrounds. Additionally, the Academic Coach-English/Speech professional tutor will work directly with the Director of SARC to provide training to peer tutors that leads to student success in English and speech.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Assist the SARC Director in carrying out activities that support the mission of the SARC and the college;
Provide individual and/or small group tutoring to students in-person and/or remotely in English and Speech courses according to a posted schedule, and other subjects as applicable;
Build a rapport with students;
Collaborate with instructors, other Academic Coaches and Director of SARC to determine the learning needs of students and the tutoring approach preferred by the course instructor;
Facilitate learning in order to assist students in improving academic achievement by identifying learning problems and developing strategies to address those challenges;
Cooperate with SARC Director, Academic Coaches and SARC Assistant on the development, piloting, and implementation of training programs designed to assist peer tutors in understanding principles of delivering effective tutor sessions in English and Speech;
Collaborate with SARC Director and staff to design, develop and deliver student success workshops and other support courses as needed;
Maintain appropriate records of tutoring sessions and scheduling appointments in electronic database according to SARC practices;
Use instructional technologies appropriately and effectively, including Cengage, NoRedInk, TutorTrac, and learning management systems such as Canvas and MyDC3;
Update and consult the SARC Director with student's progress and making other academic referrals for students to other appropriate college resources (e.g., counselors, Academic Coach: Learning Specialist);
Collaborate with SARC Director and staff to design, develop and deliver peer tutor training and other support courses as needed;
Participate in professional development offerings at DC3;
Act as a representative for the SARC within the college community;
Evening hours and one Sunday per semester prior finals week;
Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in English/Speech or related field;
Strong communication, instructional, and organizational skills;
Training/certification in English/Speech instruction; and
Experience working with Hispanic, "high-risk", and underprepared students.
Working knowledge of the internet, email, and computer skills in Microsoft Office.
Obtain and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in English/Speech or closely related field;
Bilingual skills (English/Spanish);
Experience teaching English language learners;
Experience teaching adults and/or students in the community college setting;
Supervisory Responsibilities
Physical Requirements - with or without assistance
Ability to lift and carry 35 pounds over 25 feet.
Ability to hear informational speaker in conversational voice at a distance of 10 ft. and on telephone
Ability to speak clearly and audibly to others at 10 ft distance and on the telephone.
Ability to stretch, bend, stoop, and kneel as required to perform the duties of this position.
Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
