College & Career Guidance Counselor Duties & Responsibilities Rooted in the Salesian educational approach, the College and Career Guidance Counselor utilizes the School Counseling National Standards as defined by the American School Counselor Association to facilitate the academic development, career development and personal/social development of all students. The school counselor serves as an advocate for the student and works in collaboration with parents, students, teachers, administration, and community in order to promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified needs. Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree required (preferably with a major in counseling, social work, and psychology),

  • Credential: California Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPS) in Counseling.

  • Experience: At least three years of experience as a counselor in a comprehensive high school setting

  • Should have a relentless focus on ensuring all students are prepared for and gain acceptance to a four-year college; - Knowledge of and advocacy for the mission of Catholic Education Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in a related field

  • Bilingual speaking, reading, and writing abilities (Spanish) - Naviance software experience

  • Student scheduling experience Major Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to): As part of a high school counselor assignment, the counselor will serve as a member of a counseling staff to deliver a comprehensive school counseling program by providing curriculum guidance, individual student planning, preventive and responsive services, and system support. Major duties and responsibilities include: 1) Academic Counseling

  • Program planning and adjustment

  • Confer with students regarding credit and graduation requirements

  • Assist students in making the transition from one school level to another and from one program to another

  • Counsel students and / or parents regarding special programs

  • Facilitate STEP services for students in caseload

  • Monitor students' progress

  • Counseling parents / students in completing college entrance (A-G requirements) and facilitating college exploration 2) Career Counseling

  • Assist students to become more aware of their aptitudes, abilities, and Interests

  • Counsel with individuals and groups on jobs and career objectives

  • Assist students to correlate programs with career objectives

  • Provide information concerning occupations, careers, and training possibilities 3) Personal Counseling

  • Assist students in resolving individual problems

  • Assist students in developing personal decision-making competencies

  • Provide information about community resources to students with special problems 4) Evaluate, Interpret, and Communicate Student Test Data 5) Counsel and Consult with Parents and Staff Members

  • Assist parents in coping with student-related crises and developmental problems

  • Assist parents in achieving a realistic perception of their child's development

  • Consult with members of the administrative and teaching staff by sharing appropriate individual student data

  • Assist in the identification of students with special needs and problems e. Assist with the educational, personal, and social problems of students f. Participate in curriculum development regarding the emerging needs of students; assist in the upgrading of guidance and special programs 6) Counselor Duties

  • Regular work hours: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Complete fall semester one to one meetings with each of his students by December 2013; this includes reviewing Naviance, graduation/college entrance requirements, completing a 4 year plan, and providing key reminders to students in a comprehensive packet.

  • Monitor student progress, especially struggling learners and D/F students; communicate with parents, teachers and students.

  • Implement prevention and intervention strategies that foster student success, including: study skills development; referral to tutoring and/or Counseling Partners of Los Angeles; use of the - - - -- Weekly Progress Monitoring form; engaging parent in the process via conferences with teachers or phone/email communication.

  • Assist students one-on-one in the Course Selection and Summer School options in January/February.

  • Participate in all counseling related events, including Parent and College Nights, Testing Day, Financial Aid Night, Student workshops and training sessions, classroom presentations, Saturday Placement Testing days, etc.

  • Contribute to developing the Master Schedule using Student Course Requests and related data (e.g., AP and subject specific rosters).
