The University of Massachusetts Medical School provides students with support throughout their training. The Academic Advisor helps students develop study plans as they prepare for class and standardized board exams. Due to the demands of the curriculum, students are often stressed and anxious and so the Academic Advisor aids students by addressing those concerns when designing study schedules and test taking systems. The Advisor does not have to be an expert in science or medicine but needs a strong background in creating academic interventions for students in high school, undergraduate, or graduate educational systems.
Provide one-on-one academic enrichment support for students with academic challenges and/or ADA accommodations tailored toward their individual needs. Follow-up with students to ensure appropriate case management
Develop or implement advanced individualized study plans based on interviews, test reviews, and documentation from other service providers. Refer to, or communicate with, appropriate mental health personnel as needed
Provide individual and group assistance to students preparing for standardized certification and course exams, addressing study skills, organization, time management, study planning, and test taking.
Provide appropriate learning and time management strategies to all students with specific strategies to meet individual needs
Document in writing student plans, progress, and outcomes. Track and report program outcomes and quality measures
Develop and disseminate materials, resources and curricular content, including online offerings, to enhance academic enrichment access and support for learners and faculty
Provide academic enrichment support for UMMS pipeline programs designed to enhance diverse learner recruitment and retention, including non-traditional learners and those from groups underrepresented in medicine
Actively participate on institutional teams representing the department
Pursue opportunities to advance the field through scholarship and extramural collaborations
Perform other duties as required.
Master's degree in Education, Psychology, or equivalent experience
3 years of relevant job experience
Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communications skills
Familiarity with interviewing techniques
Ability to utilize and identify resources to gain familiarity with curriculum, as well as to design intervention programs
Coaching skills to facilitate student ability to implement learning plans
Knowledge of educational software platforms and Microsoft Office Suite
PhD in Education/Psychology/Counseling
Graduate coursework in intervention design
Familiarity with FERPA, confidentiality, and other laws governing communication in an educational setting.
Experience developing academic interventions in a secondary or post-secondary educational setting
Working knowledge of how to develop educational plans that are effective when students are taking on a challenging curriculum and may be impacted by anxiety, stress, and perfectionism.
Effective time management systems.
Awareness of when to refer students for mental health support.
Knowledge of Blackboard and other computer programs used in service to students
