The Political Science Department within the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) at North Carolina State University invites applications for an undergraduate academic advising position. This position is a full-time, 12 month appointment.
The successful candidate will provide academic advice to undergraduate Political Science majors and will facilitate coherence, stability, and consistency to the academic program. Responsibilities include: * Advise students about completion of major political science curriculum requirements * Help students define academic goals and gain an understanding of how to achieve them * Understand and communicate to students the implications of the program plan and degree progress * Help students develop their academic focus within the major * Keep abreast of relevant course offerings across the College and campus and maintain connections with student service staff across campus * Act as resource for tenured and tenure-track faculty on issues related to implementation of curricula and academic policies developed by faculty * Certify completion of degree requirements and honors designations including approval of substitutions for major requirements and transfer evaluation credit * Assist in planning of program events, including spring and fall commencement ceremonies * Understand, interpret, and enforce University, College, and Departmental policies while exploring academic and professional options * Help students make transitions and access full range of university resources Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis. Excellent interpersonal skills including strong communication skills.
Demonstrated skills in the areas of judgment, decision-making, problem solving, organization, and attention to detail. Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment. Ability to build knowledge of University, College and departmental policies, procedures, and requirements.
An understanding of Political Science as an academic discipline. Proficient in social media, excel, word, power point, instructional software (Moodle, Blackboard, Skype, etc.)

Daily Operations of the Academic Enhancement Program (AEP): -Oversee day, night, and summer study hall hours Sunday through Friday -Responsible for range of student-athletes from various teams: conduct academic meetings, collect and evaluate progress reports, assist student while s/he signs up for tutoring, discuss academic performance or behavioral issues, etc. -Assist with academic support of at-risk student-athletes -Maintain AEP forms (intervention spreadsheet, time sheets, check in forms, computer logs, etc.) -Communicate with coaches frequently in reference to the academic performance of their student-athletes, behavioral or academic issues, overall progress concerns, etc. -Daily operations of Academic Enhancement Program including maintenance of computer lab and study rooms, monitoring study hall sessions, assigning penalty points, and other duties as assigned 2.) Overall Operations of SAASS Department -Assist in creation of the At-Risk Assessment -Coordinate student worker staff training and management -Create AEP study hall schedules for individual student-athletes -Communicate with Writing and Learning Commons, Career Services, Disability Services, and other on-campus offices in order to facilitate guest speakers, joint workshops, etc. -Responsible for creating, planning, and implementing academic workshops during each semester -Develop and maintain Academic Support Calendar and distribute monthly -Assist with academic summary reports and explanations at the conclusion of each semester -Assist the Director of Academic Support and the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Academics as needed -Other responsibilities as assigned -Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends -Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution The University Of North Carolina Chapel Hill NC
