The academic advisor for special programs provides advising support and services to a case load made up of general populations students, as well as students who have been conditionally admitted into the University through the Rambler Success Program.

Special programming responsibilities support the Rambler Success Program and include, but are not limited to, a pre-fall, summer program; adherence to a high-touch advising approach in the fall and spring that requires frequent communication and outreach with students and campus partners, as well as regular meetings with faculty; and developing programming throughout the academic year to support under-prepared and/or at-risk, conditionally admitted students in their first two years. Some evening or weekend work may be required to support students in these programs.

The ratio of Rambler Success students to general population students in this position's caseload varies based on the number of students who are admitted through The Rambler Success Program each year.

Academic advising responsibilities include for both general population and Rambler Success Students:

  • Assists students in developing a meaningful academic and co-curricular plan within the Jesuit tradition.

  • Teaches several sections of the freshmen seminar (including Rambler Success sections).

  • Presents academic workshops on various topics, such as registration, campus resources, software usage, degree requirements and learning strategies.

  • Advises students via phone, e-mail, walk-in and scheduled appointments.

  • Maintains accurate records using various software.

  • Develops advising resources promoting student success and retention in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Communicates degree requirements, academic policies (including FERPA) to students, parents and faculty.

  • Assists incoming first year and transfer students through orientation programming.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience

Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field required and three years of full-time related work experience are required. An appropriate combination of comparable work and education experience may be considered.

Qualifications

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have worked in the field of higher education. The successful candidate will also have proven administrative, time management and relational skills, and have worked in a fast paced environment.

  • Candidates who have worked with or taught first and second year college students who have additional challenges persisting toward graduation will be given preference.

  • Ability to work effectively with undergraduate students in a holistic manner with an enthusiasm for providing student-centered services in the Ignatian tradition.

  • Ability to provide empathic, compassionate, consistent, accurate, developmental, student-focused, accessible and honest advising.

  • Ability to teach first year experience courses and appropriate study strategy courses.

  • Attention to detail and proficiency in keeping accurate student records.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well in teams.

General Summary The Assistant Director/Academic Advisor reports to the Director of Advising in the LAS Undergraduate College Office and liaises with the chairs of the Departments of Sociology and History. They are responsible for the academic advising of current and prospective Sociology and History major(s) and minor(s) currently; students from other departments may be added if enrollments fluctuate significantly. This includes direct advising (in-person and online), the production of advising support materials for students and faculty in multiple formats. The person in this position must have thorough knowledge of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences' undergraduate curricula, policies, and procedures and of LAS graduate programs, other university academic offerings, and university policies that pertain to undergraduate students. This individual will liaise among department faculty, the Office for Academic Advising Support, and other University partners. Responsibilities & Duties * Advises current and potential Sociology and History majors and minors, and other declared LAS majors and minors as needed, regarding course choices, major selection, progress toward graduation, graduate and professional school options, career opportunities, and tuition/financial implications. * Refers students to other university offices when necessary. * Leads and coordinates holistic academic advising initiatives in the Department of Sociology and History. * Assigns appropriate faculty advisors to students based on their academic interests. * Creates and maintains advising support materials for students and faculty in multiple print and electronic formats. * Trains faculty on model advising practices; supports faculty mentoring efforts. * Makes recommendations to the chair(s) and the Dean's Office regarding course placements, substitutions, and waivers. * Attends regular meetings with the LAS Undergraduate College Office staff and the meetings for the Departments of Sociology and History by invitation. * Provides regular feedback to College Office advising process (new student advising, probation and dismissal, graduation) leaders. * Assists the Associate Director with accurately accounting for all program requirement changes. * Assists with degree conferral, newly declared students' record analysis, transfer credit approvals and ensuring the appropriate application of college credit toward the degrees of new, continuing, and graduating Sociology and History (and other declared LAS majors as needed) using the Degree Progress Report. * Performs other duties as assigned.
