Academic Advisor, Initial Certification Programs

Serves as advisor for the Maryland State-approved graduate initial certification (ACT & master's) for partner LEAs and cohorts, as assigned, including elementary, early childhood, special education, TESOL, and secondary education certification programs as assigned. Academic advisors provide students with the coaching, academic planning and advising support, and interventions necessary to succeed in their academic careers. An academic advisor is a student's dedicated resource for academic knowledge, experience and insight to help develop the best path forward to achieve an education that will move them forward in their chosen field.

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

• Assists students with coursework selection, course registration, and Praxis testing required for certification; admits new students; and develops new and continuing programs plans.

• Conducts transcript analysis of student records at entry, mid-point, and exit to assure compliance with Maryland State Department of Education and CAEP requirements for program approval and teacher licensing. While conducting a transcript review assess student goals versus what they are qualified for to advise options for a best path forward.

• Participates in group information sessions scheduled by Enrollment Management and the School of Education.

• Collaborates with the Director of Clinical Field Experience and provides leadership in providing appropriate internship experiences for assigned students, including orientation of interest to the field experience, provision of periodic support seminars during the internship, and intervention in problematic situations as necessary.

• Participates in the revision of handbooks; organizes and maintains office records, files, statistics, and confidential information; and works on partnership agreements and plans of study for cohort partnerships.

• Performs similar, comparable, or related duties as may be assigned or required.

Qualifications:

• Knowledge: Master's in Education or related field required.

• Experience: 2 years experience in education, teaching, and administration experience required; 5 years preferred.

• Skills/Aptitude: Requires strong interpersonal skills, experience in interviewing and data analysis, and excellent computer skills; excellent decision-making skills, the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff, as well as professional oral and written communication skills; proficiency in organizational and time management skills, teamwork, and confidentiality. Must be adept with general office equipment, Brightspace learning management systems or similar systems, Microsoft Office, and database management.

• Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Some evening and weekend hours may be required to meet prospective students and teacher candidates.
