Responsibilities

General Purpose:

The Barry Florescue Undergraduate Business Program is seeking a motivated and dedicated team member to serve as an Academic Advisor for our growing team. The Academic Advisor will share approximately a third of the caseload of intended and declared business majors and minors. This position will provide comprehensive and personalized advising to a global and diverse body of undergraduate students within all class years. The Academic Advisor fosters a supportive and inclusive environment, supporting students in their efforts to achieve their personal, academic, and professional goals.

The Barry Florescue Undergraduate Business Program is a joint program between Simon Business School and The School of Arts & Sciences. Our program offers a B.S., B.A., and a minor in business. The Undergraduate Business Program works closely with the College Center for Advising Services (CCAS) to support our students.

Reports to - Assistant Director of Advising & Student Success

Responsibilties:

Academic Advising (65%)

  • Advises undergraduate students pursuing a major or minor on academic matters including program selection, course selection and prerequisites, extended course planning, academic difficulties and concerns, course registration help as needed, transfer credit, major/minor declarations, and making progress toward meeting graduation requirements. Advocates for students' needs and provides referrals for specialized assistance.

  • Maintains current knowledge of school policies, Rochester Curriculum, academic programs, and policies and procedures.

  • Serves as a college advisor for a cohort of assigned transfer students intending to major in business. Provides information about program planning, academic resources, special academic opportunities, rules and policies, and graduation requirements. Meet with each student regularly and provide appropriate and timely referrals to university resources.

  • Serves as probation advisor for a cohort of assigned transfer students placed on academic probation. Guides students through the probation process, helping students improve their academic standing with the university, develop study skills, and if relevant, and provide appropriate and timely referrals to university resources.

  • Guides students on the development of four-year academic plans and connects students to academic and career development opportunities such as study abroad, research, internships, clubs/organizations, and other co-curricular activities.

  • Implements proactive outreach throughout the year for each student. Monitors student progress as they work toward degree completion. Helps students understand and interpret policies impacting their enrollment and progress toward their degree. Identify at-risk students and collaborate with faculty and staff to address challenges and barriers to success.

  • Assists students seeking preliminary career counseling and special academic programs. Educates students on the process of career exploration and the steps of connecting with career advisors. Assists with tracking student outcomes post-graduation.

  • Effectively communicates and explains policies and procedures to students, parents, and UR community.

  • Maintains individual records with proper advising documentation in OnBase and business major/minor curriculum planning in FileMaker.

  • Liaises with faculty to ensure the timely completion of transfer credit requests. Follow up with faculty members and record results with the Registrar and on FileMaker accordingly.

  • Adopts new advising technologies/software and understands trends in the higher education field.

Engagement & Events (20%)

  • Participate in student-related informational events on campus such as the new student welcome fair, research fair, undergraduate business major declaration event, and other business programming as needed.

  • Plan and participate in Admissions informational sessions for prospective students and newly admitted students.

  • Meet with prospective students and families for an informational session about our program, opportunities on campus, and related questions. Connect with other academic and athletic departments to coordinate meeting times for visiting prospective students.

  • Serve as the chapter advisor for Beta Gamma Sigma, the business honor society. Promote the organization, nominate new members, facilitate the acceptance process, and coordinate a celebration event.

  • Assist with and attend the business program's graduation ceremony.

  • Opportunity to join committees in Simon Business School and/or School of Arts & Sciences

  • Liaises with other departments such as the Center for Advising Services, Education Abroad, Greene Center, Teaching & Learning Center, Ain Center for Entrepreneurship, Disability Resources, Admissions, and the Simon Business School.

Business Program Development (15%)

  • Maintains awareness and understands relevant policies and processes of the Simon School, School of Arts & Sciences, and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Collaborate and serve as a resource for faculty teaching in the undergraduate business program.

  • Contribute to the strategic plan and goals for the Undergraduate Business Program, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of related experience required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in counseling, student affairs, or higher education.

  • Demonstrated experience with and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Strong cross-cultural communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and desire to work with students from underserved communities.

  • Empathetic and student-centered approach. Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.

  • Excellent organization, time management, and ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks effectively.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, a desire to advocate for students, and a passion for assisting students as they formulate their educational and career goals.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 20.92 - $ 29.29 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
