Position Information

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master's degree and at least one liberal arts degree are preferred. Advising experience or a strong background working with students may override the preference for a Master's degree. Applicants who have academic advising experience with college-age students are given priority.

Position Summary

An Advisor II is expected to exhibit a thorough knowledge of the University's rules, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to their specific area of advising; a thorough knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a specific area of academic study; effective problem solving and interpersonal communication skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and the ability to interpret policies and procedures and communicate these effectively to students and faculty.

Departmental advisors are expected to foster student engagement with the academic, social, and professional culture of their department. Advisors are housed within their assigned department in an effort to achieve this critical goal.

An Advisor II is needed to demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team and to plan, carry out, and evaluate project-based work as determined by the needs of the office.

All academic advisors are needed to maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records, and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students. Regular attendance at weekly staff meetings is mandatory, and workshop and retreat attendance is also an expected part of the position. Franklin College academic advisors are expected to be available to work throughout the summer to advise incoming freshmen and transfers at summer orientation.

This position offers an opportunity to create and enhance programming for the benefit of students advised in the college. Advisors at this level also assist with training and observation of new advisors and may be asked to serve on hiring committees. An Advisor II often collaborates with other offices, colleges, and organizations campus-wide that serve students.

Academic Advising

  • Meet with students to recommend courses for the upcoming semester, prepare advising forms, answer student questions, direct students to resources on campus. This involves extensive prep time and awareness of various campus and departmental resources.

Percentage of time 60 Duties/Responsibilities

Administrative Time

  • Answer student and staff emails, schedule meetings and networking opportunities, and work on projects to benefit the advising office.
  • A high level of independent work is needed.

Student Walk-in Times

  • Answer student questions during open office hours.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Staff Meetings

  • Regularly attend staff meetings for updates, any scheduled committee meetings, and others as needed.

Professional Development

  • Attend any classes related to academic advising or related materials. This can include, but is not limited too, the Certificate in Academic Advising.
