Preferred Qualifications
A Master's degree and at least one liberal arts degree are preferred. Advising experience or a strong background working with students may override the preference for a Master's degree. Applicants who have academic advising experience with college-age students are given priority.
Position Summary
This position is associated with the Division of Biological Sciences.
An Advisor II must exhibit a thorough knowledge of the University's rules, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to their specific area of advising; a thorough knowledge of course offerings and requirements of a specific area of academic study; effective problem solving and interpersonal communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; and the ability to interpret policies and procedures and communicate these effectively to students and faculty.
Advisors who are promoted to Advisor II have demonstrated a level of competency in executing all of the Advisor I position duties to allow them to use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to address specific needs of the office. An Advisor II must demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team and to plan, carry out, and evaluate project-based work as determined by the needs of the office.
All academic advisors must maintain consistent contact with their students, maintain accurate student records, and respond in a timely manner to questions from their students. Regular attendance at weekly staff meetings is mandatory, and workshop and retreat attendance is also an expected part of the position. Franklin College academic advisors must be available to work throughout the summer to advise incoming freshmen and transfers at summer orientation.
This position offers an opportunity to create and enhance programming for the benefit of students advised in the college. Advisors at this level also assist with training and observation of new advisors and may be asked to serve on hiring committees. An Advisor II often collaborates with other offices, colleges, and organizations campus-wide that serve students.
This Advisor II position has additional responsibilities beyond individual advising, such as maintaining the Biology undergraduate research database, and duties surrounding support of undergraduate research, helping with graduation in the Division of Biological Sciences, and helping with other departmental programming such as majors' orientation, majors fairs, etc.

Advising Students
Meet with students to recommend courses for the next semester, prepare advising forms, answer student questions, direct students to resources on campus. This involves extensive prep time and awareness of various campus related software and resources.
Percentage of time 60 Duties/Responsibilities
Administrative and Senior Time
Continued review of application requirements for Pre-Business students, answer student and staff emails, schedule meetings and networking opportunities and work on projects to benefit the advising office. A high level of independent work is expected. As an Advisor II, the best applicant will be able to create and implement initiatives that contribute to student services.
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
Student On Call and Walk in Times
Answer student questions during open office hours such as on call or walkins. These hours are determined by semester based on office need. As an advisor II, the expectation of time spent may vary.
Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities
Staff Meetings
Regularly attend weekly staff meetings for updates, any scheduled committee meetings, and others as needed

Professional Development
Attend any classes related to academic advising or student services. This can include, but is not limited to, the Certificate in Academic Advising.
