The Academic Advisor II at Missoula College will support the academic success of students by providing academic advising to students across Missoula College campus. The Academic Advisor II will collaborate closely with the academic faculty, program directors, and department chairs to enhance student success through persistence, retention and credential completion.
The Academic Advisor II will be well versed in curriculum requirements and academic policies for Missoula College students. This position will forge relationships with staff members from campus offices that provide student services, such as TRIO, Disability Services, Career Services, Financial Aid, Writing Center, Tutoring Services, Graduation Office, and the Office of Student Success in order to make effective referrals. This position will assist with on-boarding new students including: online orientation, registration, and welcoming new students. The Academic Advisor II will help students solve problems and navigate institutional processes and procedures. The Academic Advisor II will assist in developing baccalaureate pathways; develop and deliver training modules for students; and assist with Missoula College Major and Career Fairs.
The Academic Advisor II requires incumbent to develop working knowledge to skillfully conduct advising appointments, demonstrating in-depth knowledge of academic curriculums, academic policies and services and resources for students at Missoula College; develop working knowledge to foster relationships with advisees leading to enriched undergraduate experiences; develop working knowledge of advising technologies to review student records, document appointments and additional student contacts and track student progress; develop working knowledge to make effective referrals to campus resources; and develop working knowledge to lead students in assessing options and making sounds decisions to support their academic success.
Ability to learn in detail programs involving transfer education, career-technical education, developmental education, and community education.
Ability to learn the University of Montana General Education curriculum, MUS Core, and other graduation requirements.
Ability to advise students regarding a myriad of issues from course selection to withdrawals and reinstatements to support services such as tutoring and counseling.
Familiarity with Missoula College and University of Montana academic policies and processes including waitlists, probation and suspension, withdrawals and reinstatements.
Ability to guide students through appeals and petition processes.
Knowledge of FERPA guidelines and an ability to talk in accordance with federal statutes with parents and others concerned about a student's welfare.
Ability to effectively use and assist others with advising technologies.
Ability to collaborate on projects and handle conflict in a professional manner.
Ability to forge and foster a professional relationship with academic department chairs and advocate for students when appropriate.
Knowledge of Missoula College and University of Montana campus services offices.
Excellent communication skills including listening and feedback skills.
Knowledge in use of computer software programs for word processing (MS Word), spreadsheets, (Excel), computerized calendars and e-mail (MS Outlook).
