The Student Success Hub provides a collaborative structure for advisors to support students across multiple programs, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and a supportive leadership team dedicated to professional advising and student success. This Academic Advisor I position will be cross-trained across programs to facilitate students' access to high quality advising experiences while also allowing for variety and expanded opportunities for the advisor.

With direct supervision, this position advises a large population of students regarding their academic planning and progress by utilizing professional advising and guidance skills. Interprets and explains university academic policy and procedure to assist students in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to degree completion.

This position will assist the University in promoting a climate of respect that cultivates and sustains transformative practices by forging spaces of possibility where people feel valued and welcomed, and respecting all students in their quests for individual success through degree programs, certificates, majors, etc.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skills in communication, time management, and problem solving. The Student Success Hub seeks and values team members who are curious, resilient, proactive, and committed to student success.

Responsibilities

  • Meets with undergraduate students to provide information and guidance on academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements and exceptions and course planning and registration.

  • Facilitates students' academic progress by evaluating their needs and developing appropriate educational plans. Makes referrals for students who need assistance with overcoming learning obstacles, tutoring, career decisions, mental health, or other needs.

  • Disseminates information to students, faculty, and departments about changes in major requirements or University policies and adjusts advising strategies as appropriate.

  • Actively participates in campus-based professional development communities, including, but not limited to, UAAC or other relevant campus-based organizations that advance direct skills in academic advising.

  • Uses enterprise-level data analytics and student record technology platforms (e.g., EAB Navigate) to monitor student progress. Participates in proactive advising and intervention strategies for assigned student populations.

  • Proficient in degree-tracking software, record-keeping systems, and advising-related technologies

  • Maintains students' academic files that include a record of advising activity, referrals, exceptions made, transfer courses, etc. Actively engages with EAB Navigate.

  • Participates in advising and related activities during New Student Orientation each semester.

  • Attends monthly staff meetings and trainings related to advising.

  • Supports the Student Success Hub in appropriate outreach events and activities as assigned.

  • Provides other advising-related activities as needed and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills

Preference will be given to individuals with education, experience, and or interest in the following areas:

  • Human Development & Family Studies, Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Disability Studies, Psychology, Sociology, and/or Criminology; OR
  • Political Science, Economics, Health Society and Policy, and/or Financial Planning & Counseling.
