Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and (1) year of prior experience in academic advising, academic coaching, or related field within higher education or community based organizations; understanding and/or experience with diverse cultural backgrounds.

Preferred Education/Training/Experience

Master's degree and (2) years of experience in academic advising. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Minimum Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrate ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with multiple constituencies across campus.

  • Experience working with diverse groups.

  • Knowledge of theories and best practices regarding the academic development of students.

  • Prior experience in planning and implementation of complex projects.

  • Working knowledge of student management systems.

  • General knowledge of college programs, requirements, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written.

  • Strong planning, facilitation, and presentation skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as to function effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Ability to work with culturally diverse staff and populations and a variety of educational personnel and community audiences.

  • Possess strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.

  • Proficient with computer applications; a thorough understanding of Microsoft Office suite

  • Ability to prioritize work and perform multiple tasks.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, follow-through and persistence working with students, faculty and staff, administration, and the community.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of Colleague, EAB Navigate, and Zogotech and the ability to utilize various technology tools to assist in tracking of student retention.

Job Duties

  • Review placement test scores to assess students' readiness to begin college-level work and advise on course placement accordingly.

  • Assist students with appropriate course selection and instruct them in the online registration process.

  • Meet with students regularly to review degree progress and graduation requirements.

  • Advise students individually and/or within groups regarding academic core and/or departmental requirements, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources.

  • Provide guidance on academic topics such as degree requirements and relevant course selection, and assist students in setting and achieving educational and career goals.

  • Monitor the academic progress of a student caseload, including proactive outreach to provide students with timely assistance.

  • Conduct verification of degree progress, remove holds, and approve various forms to ensure timely student progression.

  • Enter advising notes into EAB Navigate following best practices for documenting student appointments/contacts.

  • Conduct student outreach for early alerts submitted by faculty to address academic concerns promptly.

  • Liaise with appropriate department administrators to ensure course access and availability for students

  • In collaboration with staff and faculty, initiate and/or enhance unit-specific or joint programs, projects, organizations, or other co-curricular opportunities.

  • Participate in campus events, advising meetings, professional conferences, and individual professional development.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, and repetitive motions.

The position requires lifting 10-15 pounds, the ability to push a cart and assist with event set-up.
