The primary responsibility of an Academic Advisor is to support new and continuing undergraduate and/or graduate students with an efficient delivery of Academic Advising services and support. Through these efforts, Academic Advisors play an integral role in supporting successful academic performance, engagement, satisfaction, and persistence to timely degree completion.

This position's primary assignment is to the College of Health Professions, undergraduate students, on the Pleasantville campus. There may be collaboration and cross-over with other programs/majors at times in an effort to retain balanced caseloads, provide all students with the highest caliber of advisement support, and provide growth opportunities for Academic Advisors.

Position Duties

  • Provide proactive, holistic, and comprehensive academic advisement to each student on caseload from the point of assignment through degree completion. Advisement sessions must include individual meetings but may also include group sessions and other forms of advisement outreach and communication.

  • Align advisement support with the Division of Advisement's Strategic Caseload Management model, which identifies students in various tiers and are associated with specific types of outreach and targeted guidance.

  • Ensure that each student understands all university requirements and individual program requirements as they progress through their curriculum.

  • Maintain detailed student appointment and advising records in On Track, respond in a timely manner to all OnTrack flags, and follow up with students to ensure effective resolution to all raised concerns.

  • Verify that each student on caseload is appropriately registered for courses in alignment with their curriculum and timely degree completion.

  • Proactively track student progress and work closely with faculty and relevant university offices to identify, document, and resolve barriers to success and program progression.

  • Support student requests on a variety of academic matters including registration, schedule changes, add/drop, waivers/substitutions, transfer credits, declaring/changing majors or minors, dual degree program, academic withdrawals, leave of absences, internship credit approvals, and resumption of study.

  • Monitor Degree Works to ensure accuracy for program progression and the Registrar's official degree audit process. Collaborate with Registrar to resolve any barriers to awarding degrees upon program completion.

  • Support schedule creation, when needed, for incoming freshmen and transfer students. Participate in Orientation and related onboarding efforts, including collaboration across the division and with Student Affairs, the First Year and Transfer Experience team, and Admissions.

  • Support initiatives to ensure continued student registration, returns from LOA's, and seamless transitions in Resuming Studies, inclusive of documenting and reporting on any barriers to continued enrollment.

  • Engage in activities and programs such as Awards and Commencement as they relate to advising and student success.

  • Collaborate within select advisement working groups and committees to support initiatives related to academic advisement.

  • Connect students with appropriate colleagues and partnering departments when needed, including but not limited to faculty members, Career Services, International Students, SADACA, Registrar, Financial Aid, the Learning Center, Counseling Services, and other student support areas.

  • Performs other such duties as may be assigned from time to time.

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, this position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are individuals at the University who, because of their function at the University, have an obligation under the Clery Act to notify the University of alleged Clery Crimes that are reported to them in good faith, or alleged Clery Crimes that they may personally witness. CSAs will be required to complete training with respect to the Clery Act and the responsibilities of a CSA.

Work Hours

Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM with additional hours as needed. On occasion, position may require evening and weekend hours.

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Higher Education, Education, Counseling, or a related field is strongly preferred.

  • Relevant experience in a college or educational setting, particularly in academic advisement, student support services, or student development.

  • Evidence of strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple responsibilities in an efficient and timely manner. Excellent oral, written and presentation skills, as well as a high degree of interpersonal skills.

  • High degree of motivation, commitment to innovation, and the ability to work in a dynamic student services environment. Commitment to supporting holistic, proactive, student-centered support and building positive relationships.

  • Able to collaboratively work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds in an inclusive environment and have a demonstrated commitment to DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) practices. Must possess strong ethos of student service and support.

  • Microsoft office applications is required. Experience working with Banner or related Student Information Systems is beneficial. High degree of aptitude in utilizing Zoom and related communication tools.
