The ABLE Early Childhood Program focuses on Early Childhood Kindergarten readiness. Members will be placed in Community Action Organization (CAO) of WNY Head Start classrooms throughout Western New York, working with 3- and 4-year-old students.

In addition to supporting the classroom learning environment, members will work directly with small groups of 3- and 4-year-old students who, based on math assessment results taken each September (Teaching Strategies GOLD Assessments), are categorized as "below" development benchmarks in math concepts. Members will work with these students to help them reach "meeting" or "exceeding" development benchmarks, and thus be prepared for Kindergarten, by playing 5 different developmentally appropriate, evidence-informed math games two times a week. The math games include:

The Great Race, Basic Hiding, Hidden Stars, Animal Spots and Feed the Woozle. Each game is aligned to specific math content. ABLE members will also receive training for the Childhood Development Associates credential (CDA) training during their term of service, which will allow members to learn the necessary tools and skills to work in an Early Childhood setting.

This credential will also make members more marketable when looking for Early Childhood jobs and increase their starting salary. The CDA includes: planning a safe and healthy learning environment; advancing children's physical and intellectual development; supporting children's social and emotional development; building productive relationships with families; managing an effective program; maintaining a commitment to professionalism; observing and recording children's behavior; understanding principals of child development and learning; and First Aid/CPR training.
