Shrewsbury Public Schools has immediate openings and is currently accepting applications for ABA Technicians. Please note that we are considering entry-level applicants.

The ABA Technician position is full-time with a required summer assignment component. It includes working with students on the autism spectrum and in programs designated as highly intensive at the PreK through grade 12 levels and often involves assignment to a particular student or students in a 1:1, 1:2 or more arrangement. Students supported typically are assigned to an ELC at the preschool/elementary level or similar program at the middle or high school level. Solid knowledge, training, and background in appropriate applied behavioral techniques is desirable but not required.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • May potentially work 1:1 or in a 1:2 with a student or other designated ratio depending on the nature of the disability and learning needs

  • The intensiveness of the 1:1 assignment may vary based on the complexity of the student needs:
    oDaily living skills: eating, toileting, hygiene care
    oMedical: seizures, vision, mobility, etc.
    oBehaviors: aggression, spitting, hair pulling, kicking, biting, etc. (may be required to physically restrain)

  • May work with a group of students to facilitate lessons and activities

  • Based on the student population and census in the building, may be assigned to different buildings

  • May participate and facilitate in Community activities (i.e. vocational, travel training, independent living skills, etc.)

  • Follow prescribed criteria for providing and for fading student support

  • Support student during inclusion time

  • May work with a group of students to facilitate lessons and activities

  • Provide all accommodations delineated in their IEP

  • Provide carryover of instructional practices developed by related service providers (speech, OT, PT, Psychologist)

  • Provide academic support and carryover of the lessons the teacher and special education teacher has developed

  • Develop appropriate materials that correspond with the lesson under the direction of the teacher and special education teacher

  • Creating opportunities and instructing students to be independent in a variety of settings across their school day

  • Collect and summarize data based on the educational programs developed by the special education teacher

  • Carryover and implementation of instructional programs developed by the regular/special education teacher

  • Support students accessing a variety of technology

  • May participate in team level meetings, consultations, and clinics

  • Share relevant information about learners with teachers and other school personnel as needed to facilitate problem solving, decision making, and program planning

  • Support students with organization of materials, assignments, and schedule

  • May be required to assist with note taking and scribing

  • Facilitate positive relationships and engagements with peers

  • Complete all required documentation related to incidents, accidents, discipline, assaults, etc.

  • Ensure that all accommodations outlined in the DCAP (District Curriculum Accommodation Plan) are implemented based on student needs

  • Assist in the development of portfolios for MCAS when appropriate

  • Assist in the facilitation of MCAS based on accommodations

  • Support students during their specials, lunch, and recess times

  • Facilitate and support arrival and dismissal times

  • May be required to work the summer program

  • Maintain student confidentiality

  • Carry out other assignments designated by the Principal

Required Skills, Experience, Competencies:

  • High school degree or equivalent

  • One or more years of experience in a similar role

  • Must be available to work summers

  • Exhibits the core values of Shrewsbury Public Schools

  • Academic knowledge of the grade level supported

  • Enjoys children and is dedicated to the education of all children

  • Works flexibly in a changing environment

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to effectively communicate

  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, climb, run

  • The employee must occasionally be able to lift and/or safely move children/objects

  • The employee must be able to work in a noisy, stressful, high-pressure environment, and still be able to concentrate and keep children safe

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, behavior problems, abusive students, etc.)

  • May be exposed to bodily fluids including saliva, urine, feces, vomit, blood, and/or other bodily fluids

  • The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness, although in a clean environment

  • Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene

  • Assists students with physical and/or cognitive disabilities with grooming, feeding, toileting, diapering.
