Terms of Employment:
10 months/187 days per year. Salary is on the teacher salary schedule on the SAISD Compensation Plan on a probationary contract, as applicable with additional consideration for directly related experience.

Primary Purpose:

To provide all students with appropriate learning activities in core academy subject areas designed to fulfill their maximum potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth. To provide core content instruction both in English and in Spanish to enable students to develop linguistic and academic competencies and skills that will prepare them for success in higher education and society.

Minimum Qualifications:

Performance Evaluation Requirements

  • No Teaching Experience: Favorable recommendation from an educational program supervisor
  • 1-2 Years of Teaching Experience: The summative evaluation scores must be at "proficient" or above in four of sixteen dimensions with no "improvement needed" in any dimension using TTESS or a comparable performance evaluation tool
  • 3 or More Years of Teaching Experience: The summative evaluation scores must be at "proficient" or above in nine of sixteen dimensions with no "improvement needed" in any dimension using TTESS or a comparable performance evaluation tool

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four year college or university

  • Master's degree in bilingual education and/or 18 graduate hours in bilingual education preferred

  • Valid Texas Elementary-Bilingual Teacher Certification with endorsement in bilingual education-Spanish

  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00 ) paid by the applicant

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong academic literacy and conversational skills both in English and in Spanish

  • Knowledge of core academic subject(s) assigned

  • Knowledge of dual language curriculum and instruction

  • Knowledge of integration of technology

  • Ability to instruct students and manage student behavior

  • Strong organizational, communication, writing and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to adjust and be flexible to a multitude of situations in the school environment

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year bilingual/dual language teaching experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Instructional Strategies and Delivery:

  • Analyze performance data in order to provide targeted instruction based on students' individual academic and linguistic needs

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum program and the dual language program, reflect accommodations for learning style differences, and show written evidence of preparation as required

  • Present subject matter according to the guidelines established by the dual language program, the Texas Education Agency (TEA), board policies, and administrative regulations

  • Work with other staff members to determine instructional goals, objectives and methods according to district requirements

  • Work with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students as identified in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process

  • Plan and monitor work flow of instructional assistants and volunteers

Student Growth and Development:

  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing in both languages of instruction

  • Model and explicitly teach students how to manage their own learning by identifying, evaluating, and organizing options, opportunities, and experiences

  • Create opportunities for students to analyze and reflect on their learning

  • Nurture students' linguistic, intellectual, emotional, social, and ethical development

  • Contribute to the school's avenues for student enrichment (such as working with clubs and organizations, assisting with service learning, leading an advisory, etc.)

  • Act as a positive role model for students and support the mission of the San Antonio Independent School

Classroom Management and Organization:

  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students

  • Create shared norms of high expectations and supportive systems as part of a safe, respectful and productive learning environment, and manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the SAISD Student Handbook.

  • Recognize, value, and respect the broad spectrum of languages, cultures, and ethnicities and teach students to collaborate effectively with individuals from different and similar cultural and linguistic backgrounds

  • Provide extensive opportunities for students to collaborate

  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities

Professional Development and Mentorship:

  • Commit to one's own and others' professional growth and development and participate in sustained collaboration and critical conversations among staff to support all learners

  • Meet regularly, participate in school decision-making, and build time for supporting and enriching activities with students and colleagues beyond the traditional school day

  • Continue to be intellectually curious and demonstrate the habits of mind that lead to lifelong learning about one's craft and one's students

  • Are committed members and leaders of the professional community, providing on-going professional development, mentoring, peer observation, study groups, and collaboration with teachers throughout SAISD

  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers, including maintaining and filing of all reports, records, and other required documents

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise students and monitor work flow of instructional assistants as appropriate

  • Teachers in this academy will be expected to support academic enrichment district-wide, which may include coaching peers to build their instructional capacity

Equipment:Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position

Working Conditions:

Mental and Physical Demands:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions and deadlines. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Lifting and carrying 10-25 pounds frequently, 25-40 pounds occasionally, more than 45 pounds infrequently with assistance. Pushing/pulling 10-35 pounds sporadically. May be required under specific circumstances to provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others.

Environmental Factors:

Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.).
