Characteristics of Work Benefits Supplemental Questions This is an intermediate level occupational class for the DOT Engineering Technician job series. Incumbents are primarily engaged in assisting other engineering technicians and professional engineers through performance of duties which are mainly in the functional areas of testing, projects, traffic control and safety, and manual field work. The work requires strict compliance with set operating procedures, close supervision by engineering technicians and/or professional engineers, and nominal decision making. The duties performed are mainly in the functional areas of projects, traffic control and safety, design, testing, transportations studies and right of ways. Incumbents in this class receive general supervision from an administrative superior. Examples of Work: Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following: Inspects roadside development, untreated subbases and bases, in grade preparation, surface treatment, pressure grouting, minor concrete structures, traffic stripe, traffic signs, and utility adjustments; Codes simple computer inputs; computes horizontal curve data; Assist in making field inspections and in the layout of right of way project for tracing, calculation, and conducting engineering and legal analysis; Cleans and maintains testing laboratories, project offices, vehicles, pertinent equipment relevant to his/her job; Assist in preparation of samples for testing and sampling materials; Prepare project diaries in a manner consistent with policies and procedures; Performs miscellaneous inspections including, but not limited to, clearing and grubbing, striping, minor concrete projects such as paved ditches, curbs and gutters, etc.; Performs basic testing procedures under supervision and assists in preparation of samples for testing; Maintains sign inventories as required; Performs duties as brush cutter, stake person, tape person and rear chain person; Measures and records simple distances, materials, and the temperature of materials; performs simple computations; Makes simple sketches from field notes; Lifts job related materials weighing up to 100 lbs.; Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Education: Associate's degree or completion of sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited college or university; OR Education: Graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED or High School Equivalency Diploma). AND Experience: Two (2) years of experience related to the above described duties. Substitution Statement: Above graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED or High School Equivalency Diploma), related education and related experience may be substituted on an equal basis. Documentation Required Applicant must attach a valid copy of his/her transcript or other evidence to verify completion of required coursework, where applicable. Essential Functions: Additional essential functions may be identified and included by the hiring agency. The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists engineering technicians and professional engineers. Performs manual field work. Performs general office duties, including completing forms, photocopying, and recording data.
